Heating system conversions

Trade the Oil Tank for a Modern System

Oil-to-gas, steam-to-hot-water, fossil-to-heat-pump — we handle the whole conversion, from the utility paperwork to the last radiator bled.

Oil, steam & legacy systems

Philadelphia is full of heating systems outliving their era.

Oil furnaces feeding from basement tanks. Steam boilers installed when Truman was president. Electric baseboard bleeding money in every room. These systems still run — but every year they run costs more than it should, and every year the conversion math gets better.

A conversion is more than swapping a box: gas service coordination with the utility, chimney lining, tank decommissioning, piping changes, and a new system sized to your home rather than to 1952. AJM has run this play across Philly and South Jersey for years — we know the utility process, the permits, and the pitfalls.

Oil-to-gas converts typically cut fuel costs 30-50%. Heat pump conversions can beat even that, with current incentives stacked on top. We'll price your specific conversion honestly — including the parts other quotes conveniently leave out, like tank removal and chimney work.

Know the warning signs

Six signs it's conversion time

01Oil deliveries hurt every time

Oil pricing is volatile and rarely kind. Every delivery is a reminder the meter's running.

02Your oil tank is aging

Tank failures are environmental cleanups, not just repairs. Converting retires the risk entirely.

03The boiler predates you

A 40-year-old system runs at 60-70% efficiency. Modern equipment starts at 85% and climbs.

04Gas is already on your street

If the main runs past your house, the hardest part of oil-to-gas is already done.

05Electric heat bills are brutal

Resistance baseboard is the priciest heat sold. Heat pumps deliver the same warmth for a fraction.

06Repairs on parts nobody stocks

When components need hunting on eBay, the system is telling you something.

How it works

How a conversion runs

  1. 1
    Feasibility & real quote

We check gas availability, chimney, and piping — then quote the whole job, hidden costs included.

  2. 2
    Paperwork handled

Utility applications, permits, inspections — we run the process and keep you posted.

  3. 3
    Conversion week

Old system out, new system in, tank decommissioned. Most conversions: 2-3 days of onsite work.

  4. 4
    Commissioned & documented

System tuned, inspections passed, paperwork delivered. You just feel the difference monthly.

Common questions

System Conversions FAQs

How long does an oil-to-gas conversion take?

Onsite work is typically 2-3 days. The utility's gas service timeline is the variable — anywhere from a couple of weeks to a couple of months — which is why we start that paperwork first and schedule around it.

What happens to my old oil tank?

It gets professionally decommissioned — drained, cleaned, and removed (or filled in place where removal isn't practical), documented to code. Never just abandoned; an abandoned tank is a liability that surfaces at sale time.

Is my chimney okay for a gas system?

Usually it needs a liner — gas exhaust is cooler and wetter than oil's and corrodes unlined masonry. It's a standard part of the job and it's in our quote from day one, not a surprise change order.

Should I convert to gas or go straight to a heat pump?

Genuinely depends on your rates, your ducts or radiators, and incentives. We'll price both paths with real numbers — we install both, so we have no thumb on the scale.
